PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image display device and an image display method capable of improving the image quality by preventing afterglow of a light source from being recognized by a user when a display image sharply changes into a black screen while controlling the amount of luminescence of each of plural light sources constituting a backlight according to partial brightness/darkness of the display image within an identical screen.SOLUTION: The image display device includes control means (77) that performing a filtering processing of different characteristic in a time-axis direction according to the changing speed of brightness/darkness of the display image on a lighting value for controlling the amount of luminescence of plural light sources (73a) when illuminating display panel (72) displaying an image with an illumination means (73) having the plural light sources (73a) from the backside.
