Diesters of aromatic dicarboxylic acids are prepared by bringing a vapour mixture which contains an aromatic dicarboxylic acid and an alcohol into contact with a solid esterification catalyst in particle form, which contains at least 0.2 weight % of impregnated alkali metal, and removing the diester from the reaction mixture. High yields of diester of good purity are obtained. The unwanted formation of dimethyl ether is reduced to a minimum.
