Character recognition is performed by fullyparallel sensing of the character using a plurality of photo-cells disposed in a sensing field, and reducing by stages the electrical sensing field formed by their outputs, the information for one element of a following field in this reduction being taken from the element similarly situated in the preceding field or from the elements surrounding this element, this transfer of information being controlled by the information contained in the marginal elements of the preceding field in such a way as to retain a sequence character-blank-character starting at one corner of the preceding field, if the sequence occurs. At a given stage in the reduction, i.e. in going from a given field to its successor field (which is smaller), each element of the successor field receives the bit (black or white) of the corresponding element in the given field, unless there is any black bit in the uppermost row, lowermost row, leftmost column or rightmost column of elements of the given field, when the elements are displaced by one position as and if necessary to centre the pattern, adjacent elements being ORed together, as necessary to conform to the smaller size of the successor field, as near to the field margin as possible consistent with not destroying the sequences BWB where B is a black character bit and W is a white bit. After three reduction stages, the final field is decoded to identify the character. A series of arrays of logic circuits may be used, one array per stage in the reduction, or two arrays may be used with transfer back and forth, or a two-dimensional shift register permitting shift in four directions may be used with selective inhibition of shift in selected areas.</p> |
