The invention relates to a method for conditioning a liquid. In at least one first membrane unit (3), a feed flow (2) is separated into a permeate flow (5) and a retentate flow (6). According to the invention, at least part of the retentate flow (6) and part of the feed flow (2) flow through a structural unit. In said structural unit, the retentate flow (6) moves pistons (20) in cylinders (19) of a first drum (18). The rotation of the first drum (18) is transmitted to a second drum (30) by means of a shaft arrangement (26). The second drum (30) moves pistons (32) in cylinders (31) to deliver the feed flow (2).
