Metal wire of a cross-section that makes it subject to crushing under the effect of transverse pressure, e.g. with cross-sectionally inward-turned corners and/or narrow flanges, is produced from a bar of suitable cross-sectional shape by enclosing it in a tubular metal sleeve and filling virtually all the remaining space in the sleeve with one or more suitably shaped metal strips. Compression of the bar under transverse pressure is resisted and the object shaped in this manner is mechanically processed to reduce thickness of the bar to thickness of ultimate wire, when metal sleeve and filling strips are removed.
|
