Isocyanates prepd by reacting aliphatic - halides with inorganic cyanates

Prepn. of org. isocyanates by reacting an org. cpd. contng. at least one aliph.-bonded halogen atom with an alkaline(ne earth) metal or ammonium cyanate and separating the prod. in the presence of a small amt. (0.1-10 wt.%) of an (org) acid (e.g. an inorg. acid or a sulphonic acid). Pref. reaction temp. is 50-160 degrees C. Prods. may be used as known monomers in prodn. of polymeric urethane or ureas.
