Iron ore is reduced to fine particles and mixed with water with or without a binder to make a plastic mixture which is passed between rollers to form a ribbon or a compact cake which is afterwards broken up into pellets or granules. The ore is preferably reduced to granules smaller than 6 mm. Sufficiently finely divided limestone may be added to the mix to serve as a flux for the impurities or the mineral dross, and to obtain a suitable slag. Further, a solid carbonaceous fuel may be added for the purpose offritting. The process produces from ore particles of almost any size, pellets or granules of optimum size for feeding blast furnaces.
|
