<p>Disclosed is a turbocharger casing system which houses a centrifugal impeller connected to a turbine by a shaft. The casing system includes an insert casing 20 which forms a duct 22 for feeding air to and through the impeller, and a volute casing 6 which forms a volute for receiving compressed air from the impeller, the insert casing 20 inserting into the volute casing 6. The insert casing and the volute casing have respective flanges at which the insert casing and the volute casing are joined together by fasteners. The insert casing has a flange piece 23 which forms the flange 24 of the insert casing, a wall piece 21 which forms the duct, and a connection formation, flanges 26a, 26b and screws 27, which connects the flange piece 23 to the wall piece 21. The connection formation is configured such that, under an axial load on the wall piece, the connection formation fails in shear before the fasteners can fail.</p> |
