A hard metal insert for a cutting tool comprises top and bottom parallel faces and a peripheral surface extending between the faces at right-angles thereto and forming sharp edges at the juncture of the surface with the faces, a chip controlling groove 22 extending around at least one of the faces of the insert and positioned inwardly of the edge and providing a cutting edge land 20 which extends completely around the insert, the width of the land and/or the groove varying in transverse width along the length thereof. The groove is uniformly arcuate in cross-section, and may vary in depth along its length, being deepest at its mid-point 32 between the corners. The insert may be circular, or square, triangular or rhomboidal in shape, the land and groove width being smaller at the corners in the case of the latter polygonal shapes than at a point midway between the corners. A central hole 14 is provided to facilitate mounting the insert on a tool shank. |
