<p>Unsatd. polyesters (I) are reacted with a polyhalogenated thiophenol of formula (II) (where X is Cl or Br, and n is 2-5) in soln. in organic solvent (II) in the presence of an organic basic catalyst (IV), and subsequently removing the solvent and catalyst, after which the polyester is dissolved in an olefine monomer (V). and the mixture polymerised. (I) is the reaction product of an unsatd. dicarboxylic acid, and a satd. carboxylic acid with a dihydroxy cpd. (II) may be pentachloro (or bromo) thiophenol. (III) is an aromatic hydrocarbon. (IV) is (cyclo)aliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic 3 degrees-amine. (V) is styrene. A supplementary fire retardant (Sb or P compounds) may be added. (II) is cheaper than known halo-reactants for polyesters.</p> |
