A vehicle control system comprises a sensor controller (2) for taking in sensor signals indicating a status variable of a vehicle (50) and an operation amount applied from a driver, a command controller (1) for generating a control target value based on the sensor signals taken in by the sensor controller (2) , and an actuator controller (3) for receiving the control target value from the command controller (1) and operating an actuator (5) to control the vehicle (50) , those three controller being interconnected via a network (N1). The actuator controller (3) includes a control target value generating unit (3B) for generating a control target value based on the sensor signals taken in by the sensor controller (2) and received by the actuator controller (3) via the network (N1) when the control target value generated by the command controller (1) is abnormal, and controls the actuator (5) in accordance with the control target value generated by the control target value generating unit (3B).
