In a spring holder 41 for a mechanical seal 10 and comprising a cylindrical member having circumferentially spaced spring pockets 55 open at one end and closed at the other end 56 to receive a helical spring 52, each pocket communicates with the exterior of the holder through fluid passages 58 intersecting the pocket side wall adjacent its closed end. The passages 58 are formed by machining a groove 59 in the outer periphery of the holder to intersect the radially outer portion of each pocket 55. In the embodiment shown for a rotary pump shaft seal, the holder 41 is secured by screws 44 to a sleeve 16 keyed to the pump shaft 14 and houses a rotary sealing ring 37 which is sealed to the sleeve 16 by an 0-ring 39 and urged by the springs 55 into facial sealing contact with a stationary sealing ring 33 seated in a recess 32 in a flange 22 secured to the pump housing 12. The ring 37 is drivably connected to the holder by keys 48 on the latter engaging grooves 51 in the ring. Springs 55 are compressed against a retainer plate 53 which, prior to assembly of the seal, abuts the keys 48, Fig. 4; to remove the plate and springs from the holder the plate is rotated to bring openings 63 therein, Fig. 5, in line with the keys 48. Cooling or lubricating fluid is supplied to the space 68 around the seal through a passage 67 in flange 22, leakage past the seal being drained through a passage 31. In use, particles of debris tending to collect in the pockets 55 are flushed or thrown out therefrom. |
