[Also in Divisions B4-B5, B6 and B8] An apparatus for making U-shaped staples from a length of and for applying the staples to a gathered sausage casing or bag neck comprises means to feed a supply of wire-like material W under a staple forming portion 16 of a punch and means to transfer the former staple to a position underneath a staple applying portion 26 of the punch, and means to reciprocate the punch so as to apply and clinch a staple F and simultaneously to form a staple for subsequent application. The operator places an object to be fastened across spring-loaded plates 38, 38<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 5, and then closes a gate 31 over the object. A trip rod 35 is thereby lowered, connecting compressed air to a cylinder 17<SP>1</SP>, Fig. 1, so that a punch 12 is forced downwards. The punch 12 drives a previously-formed staple F downward to be clinched about material held over an anvil 29 while a length of wire for the succeeding staple is cut and formed on a block 15. The operator allows the gate 31 to spring open, thereby retracting the piston 17 and setting into operation wire feed mechanism 51. Plates 38, 38<SP>1</SP> rise to reject the completed package. The punch 12 comprises a staple former 16, Fig. 7, and a clinching portion 26 so that as staple former 16 descends to cut the wire W with an edge 64 and bend it with edges 25, portion 26 descends to clinch a staple F. A spring-loaded pusher 66 is cammed out of the way of staple former 16 by projections 70, 70<SP>1</SP> of the former. As the punch ascends, a plate 72 beneath which the wire was fed and formed, strips the newly formed staple from the punch. When the punch 12 regains its uppermost position, the pusher 66 pushes the new staple into the path of the punch, ready for the next stapling operation. The wire W may be round or flat wire stock of other bendable material, e.g. a stiff plastics or a metal and plastics combination. |
