<p>In order to reduce the time taken for the auto-focus function of a coded symbol reader (e.g. a barcode reader) system to obtain the correct focal distance for capturing a coded symbol image (e.g. a barcode), the image processor 120 predicts an initial focal distance. When an image is successfully captured and decoded, the associated focal distance is stored in the memory. The imaging subsystem 110 uses the focal distances stored in the memory to calculate the predicted focal distance for different types of images or symbols. Although the initial focal distance is used to capture an image, if this image is unable to be decoded by the processor, then the systems auto-focal routine is initiated. If there is an insufficient number of stored focal distance, with which to calculate the predicted focal distance, then the auto-focus function may also be initiated. Other additional features include an object detection subsystem 130, and a hand held casing. The system may be used as a coded symbol reader within a smart phone.</p> |
