Polypeptide comprising an amino acid sequence of alanine dehydrogenase from Bacillus subtilis or its variants, where Leu197 or an amino acid located at a homologous position in the amino acid sequence is exchanged for an amino acid with a positively charged side chain, is new. Independent claims are included for: (1) a nucleic acid molecule comprising a nucleotide sequence coding for the polypeptide; (2) a vector comprising the nucleic acid molecule; (3) a cell comprising the polypeptide, the nucleic acid molecule or the vector; and (4) producing alanine or a compound arising from the consumption of alanine, comprising reacting pyruvate with ammonium and NADPH to form alanine by contacting with the polypeptide or the cell.
