A voltage regulator for regulating high power voltage supplies receives an input voltage 110 and outputs a regulated output voltage 130. Controller 150 controls the output voltage by altering a pulse width modulation in dependence on a temperature detected by temperature sensor 190. The sensed temperature, the controller and the pulse width modulator can be arranged as a feed-back loop, the mark to space ratio of the pulse width modulation being increased in response to increasing temperature. The temperature sensor can be a thermocouple attached to a heatsink 155. The pulse width modulated output can be applied to a buck or boost transformer 120 by a switch such as an IGBT. Transformers 120 can have three coils and the input voltage can be multi-phase. The controller can control between two levels depending on the temperature exceeding a threshold that can correspond to the maximum operating temperature of the switches. The regulator can be used to reduce the mains voltage to reduce energy consumption.
|
