Disclosed are a method and an apparatus for determining a merge mode by using motion information of a previous prediction unit. The method for determining a merge mode obtains a merge mode cost for lower-depth coding units on the basis of a merge mode cost for upper-depth coding units, which is obtained using motion information of merge candidates of the upper-depth coding units, corresponding to merge candidates of the lower-depth coding units. |
