Beta emitting promethium 147 is deposited on a supporting substrate and provided with a thin protective coating, to form a nuclear battery. Promethium oxide is mixed with a reducing agent heated in a crucible within a vacuum chamber. The crucible is a hollow tantalum container with a hole in one wall through which the promethium metal vapour passes to be deposited as a thin film on a substrate near the crucible.
