PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device showing good conditions of contrast in a bright room, white luminance and a color reproducible range.SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device includes a viewing side polarizing plate 1, a liquid crystal cell 11, a backlight side polarizing plate 21, and a backlight unit 31. The backlight unit 31 emits blue light having an emission center wavelength in a wavelength range from 430 to 470 nm and a half-value width of 50 nm or less of emission intensity, green light having an emission center wavelength in a wavelength range from 510 to 560 nm and a half-value width of 50 nm or less of emission intensity, and red light having an emission center wavelength in a wavelength range from 610 to 660 nm and a half-value width of 50 nm or less of emission intensity. The viewing side polarizing plate has a layer 4 containing an absorbing material comprising at least one of: a first absorbing material having a peak of absorbance with a maximum of the absorbance in a wavelength range from 470 to 510 nm and a half-value width of 50 nm or less; and a second absorbing material having a peak of absorbance with a maximum of the absorbance in a wavelength range from 560 to 610 nm and a half-value width of 50 nm or less. |
