An apparatus for the continuous process hydrolyzation under pressure of fibrous material such as mixtures of feathers, blood and poultry offal to form a product suitable as an animal foodstuff, comprises a pressure vessel defining a hydrolyzing chamber, an inlet passage for continuously introducing untreated fibrous material into the vessel, a discharge passage for continuously discharging treated material from the vessel, a sealing means for continuously compressing the untreated material into a pressure impervious plug in the inlet passage to define a pressure seal, and a pressure release means for continuously releasing the treated material from the discharge passage. Means are provided in the inlet passage to continuously break up the plug as it advances into the vessel. The pressure vessel may be an elongated retention tube which includes means for agitating and advancing the fibrous material. A suitable sealing means is shown in Fig. 4 wherein the fibrous material is compressed by the screw conveyor 20, the plug 24 so formed is then shredded into small particles by the shredder assembly 28, and these particles are passed into the pressure vessel. |
