1,181,537. Sealing dry cells. SERVEL Inc. 11 July, 1967 [11 July, 1966], No. 31833/67. Heading H1B. The invention comprises a seal for a dry cell (1) encased in a cylindrical magnesium electrode comprising a disc (7) of stiff and resilient plastics material closing an end of the electrode, the disc being under compression so that it exerts a continuous pressure on the inner surface of the electrode and a steel ring (4a) tightly encircling the end. The magnesium electrode may be a tube closed at one end or open at both ends, both ends being sealed according to the invention, as shown in Fig. 4. In this case the lower end of the tube is sealed and the contents introduced to the cell before the upper disc bearing the brass-capped electrode 6 is inserted. The cell is then allowed to stand so that entrapped gases may escape before the end of the magnesium tube (3a) is compressed and the steel ring fitted. The ring may have a flange (5a) and it or the electrode end may be tapered to facilitate fitting. In a multi-cell battery the intercell connectors may be soldered or welded to the steel flanges. |
