A surge protection device and method. The device comprises a switch protector (10) with at least three electrodes. When an interelectrode voltage of the switch protector (10) between two electrodes of the at least three electrodes reaches a preset value, the two electrodes are broken down. The at least three electrodes are respectively connected to a neutral wire, a protective earth wire and at least one phase wire of an alternating-current system. The surge protection device and method solve the problem that a power line communication signal is significantly attenuated due to the fact that a voltage dependent resistor is directly bridged to a power line, and the quality of the power line communication signal on the power line is guaranteed.
