[Also in Divisions B3, C7 and F4] In apparatus for heat treating an elongate extrusion which is shrinkable in the heat treatment, for example in the fabrication of elongated articles such as wire, tubing and strip formed by extruding metal compound compacts, the apparatus comprises an extruder 10, a furnace for reducing and sintering the extrusion, and a conveyer 14 having supporting means 30 for supporting the extrusion at spaced positions along its length whereby, as it is conveyed through the furnace, the extrusion is catenary between the spaced positions and is under no tension apart from its own weight. The supporting means can either extend longitudinally or transversely to the direction of movement of the conveyer. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 1, the extruder 10 supported as at 10<SP>1</SP> is preferably provided with a plurality of die discharge openings to discharge a plurality of continuous elongated extrusions, as at A, in side-by-side relation on to the conveyer 14 for passing through the furnace. In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5, the extruder 45 is supported above the upper runs of several endless belts 40 for reciprocatory movement transversely of the upper runs. |
