Recovery of anthracite pitch by heating the starting anthracite pitch having a softening temp. of 65-160 degrees C pref. 135-160 degrees C with an arom. hydrocarbon, pref. benzene xylene or toluene, at a temp. near the latter's b.pt. The lower molecular pitch fractions are thereby removed leaving a powdery pitch residue which is then heated at 170-470 degrees C for a length of time determined by the compsn. of the starting material. The product which has a softening temp. of over 300 degrees C is used to make high strength carbon constructional materials.
|
