A process for manufacturing 1,3-propanediol by reacting glycerol with hydrogen in the presence of a supported catalyst, the supported catalyst comprising at least one first compound of an element selected from iridium, rhodium, palladium and platinum and at least one second compound of an element selected from chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, both compounds being supported on alumina, wherein the at least one second compound content in the catalyst expressed in weight of trioxide per weight of catalyst is lower than 20% by weight and wherein the reaction is carried out in a liquid medium containing water in an amount of at least 3 g and less than 900 g of water per kg of liquid medium. |
