1282043 Variable speed transmissions; toothed gearing SOC D'ETUDE DE LA PROPULSION PAR REACTION and R E J LECAVELIER 30 July 1969 [31 July 1968] 38136/69 Headings F2D and F2Q A variable speed transmission comprises a primary gear-box 1 in which the transmission input shaft 5 drives two primary shafts 18, 19 (e.g. coaxial or parallel) with a continuously and cyclically variable speed ratio, and at least two secondary gear-boxes 2, 3 each having a secondary output shaft 55, 65 selectively connectable to each of the shafts 18, 19. The gearbox 1 may comprise two pairs of non-circular (e.g. mutilated) gears 7, 20 and 8, 21, the shafts 18, 19 being linked by a differential 10 ... 15 having a constant speed input 11 so that the sum of the speeds of the shafts 18, 19 is equal to the speed of the shaft 5 (or a constant ratio thereof). To give the speed cycle of the shafts 18, 19 a length different to one revolution of the shaft 5 there may be interposed sun-fixed ring planetary gearsets between shaft 5 and gears 6, 7, 8 and between shafts 18, 19 and gears 20, 21 respectively. The gear-boxes 2, 3 may have as inputs in addition to the shafts 18, 19 or 48, 49 shafts 41 and 31 rotating uniformly at the maximum and minimum speeds of shafts 18, 19, e.g. at the speed of shaft 5 and stationary. The shafts drive coaxial wheels 40, 52 or sectors 51 having notches engageable by pins in a drum 53 geared to the shaft 55. The pins selectively engage the wheels and sectors controlled by interior annular ridges in a drum 60 axially movable due to the interaction of pins 56, 57 and a cam drum 37, either the pins 56, 57 or the drum being axially movable, and the drum being driven at the speed of the wheels 6 ... 8. Alternatively, Figs. 13, 14 (not shown), the shafts 41, 48, 49 are parallel and each have a separate drum 53 moved axially either in unison or by each have separate axially movable pins 56, 57. The shafts 55, 65 of the gearboxes 2, 3 may drive a differential gearbox 4 driving the output shaft of the transmission. |
