Various embodiments of the present invention relate to a method and apparatus for recognizing a grip state of a user using a touch screen panel (TSP) sensor in an electronic device. The method for recognizing a user grip state of the electronic device may comprise the steps of: detecting a hovering input generated by the grip of the user via a touch screen of either a magnetic capacitance type or mutual capacitance type; and determining, according to the detected hovering input, the grip state of the user.
