The invention relates to an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders (Z1 to Z4), with which respective gas inlet valves (12) and gas outlet valves (13) are associated. In dependence on a current operating point of the internal combustion engine, a slope of a drag air line is determined for a current ambient value of at least one ambient variable of the internal combustion engine. The drag air line is characteristic of an air mass located in the respective cylinder after the gas exchange valves have been closed when, in the case of a specified internal combustion engine at operating temperature, said internal combustion is operated briefly without fuel metering and combustion. A cylinder air mass that is located in the respective cylinder (Z1 to Z4) after the gas exchange valves, which comprise the gas inlet and gas outlet valves, have been closed is determined for the current operating point and the respective current ambient value of the at least one ambient variable in dependence on the slope of the drag air line and a current characteristic value of a characteristic variable that is influenced by the ambient variable. |
