In order to plan a communication network of an industrial automation system, the communication network is stochastically modeled with regard to a probable transmission duration of messages within the communication network. A failure rate of the communication network to be expected can be derived from a resulting stochastic communication network model. An availability of the communication network is examined on the basis of the stochastic communication network model. If the availability of the communication network is below a specifiable minimum availability, the availability of the communication network with the use of first additional or alternative network components is iteratively determined on the basis of the stochastic communication network model. If the specifiable minimum availability is met, an examined network configuration is approved for operation. |
