METHOD FOR MANUFACTURING A HONEYCOMB CATALYST ELEMENT WITH A PLASMA DISCHARGE UNIFORMLY DISTRIBUTED THERETHROUGHOUT

Honeycomb catalyst elements (catalyst units) on a metallic substrate are well-known and widely used in various branches of the chemical industry as well as in related fields dedicated to the detoxification of industrial and automotive exhaust gases. In the method for manufacturing a honeycomb catalyst element, which involves rolling up two metal strips, one corrugated and the other flat, with a sprayed-on catalytic coating, about a transverse axis to form a honeycomb catalyst element, what is novel is that in order to reliably initiate and maintain an ionizing plasma discharge inside the unit, the spray-coated strips are rolled up with a force (σ) of from 2.5 to 7.5 n/mm2. Furthermore, the thickness of the sprayed-on catalyst layer (d) and the force (σ) applied as the strips are rolled up to form a unit are related by the empirical formulaσ/d = 0.25, whereσis the specific force (n/mm2), and d is the thickness of the sprayed-on layer (mm).
