Refractory material of high specific area, good elec. conduction and resistance to acids are prepd from a mixture of complex carbides, borides, nitrides and silicides in the presence of an auxiliary metal. Spec. the carbides are Ta3Al2MeC (where Me=Cr, Co, Fe, Ni and Zn), Nb3Al2MnC and Ta3Cr1.5Fe1.5C. The auxiliary metals are Alu, Zn, Cd, Ge, Sb, rare earths, in addition to Al, Ag, Cu, Co, Ni and Fe used in the parent specif. The products are esp. suitable for the manufacture of electrodes for high temp. electrolysis and as protective coatings. |
