<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To retain a filter in a radial direction even when gas is generated, as well as when a gas generator is stored, without using a presser plate. <P>SOLUTION: The inflator 1 is formed by housing a gas generation mechanism in a space 8 of a housing 2 formed of an adapter 2b for holding an initiator 3 and a base 2c for supporting the adapter 2b to be joined to a diffuser 2a and forming the space 8 therein, for example. The gas generation mechanism retains a filter 7, a tube 12, and a gas generator 10 to be filled on the outside of the tube 12 containing the initiator 3 and a transfer charge 4, in an upper part in the housing 2 with a retainer 6. A ring-shaped cushion member 9 is arranged in a base 2c opposite the retainer 6. The cushion member 9 has an inner periphery in contact with an outer periphery of the adapter 2b, and an outer periphery in contact with an inner periphery of the filter 7, and protrudes from the top side to the bottom side of the filter 7 across a vertical boundary position of a lower end face on the base side of the filter 7.
