A method 100 of diagnosing a trailing edge flap fault in an aircraft 10 having a trailing edge flap system 20 including multiple trailing edge flaps 22 and a flap handle 24 for setting the position of the flaps uses a plurality of flap position sensor 27. The method includes receiving a position signal 102 from the position sensor indicative of the position of at least one of the trailing edge flaps 22 and comparing the position signal to a reference position value to determine a variation 104. The variation enables a diagnosis of a trailing edge flap fault 106 and an indication 108 of the diagnosed fault can then be provided. A controller 30 within the aircraft includes a processor 36 which carries out the diagnosis.
