A meander-line circular polariser comprises two or more elongated conducting members 20, 30 mounted parallel to each other on one surface of a planer non-conducting support 10. Each of the elongate conducting members 20, 30 has a transverse meandering loop pattern. Short conductive strip members 40 are also mounted on the support 10 and are located within the meander loops and are arranged such that the polariser also forms a frequency selective surface 50. The support 10 may be made of dielectric material and the conducting pattern members 20, 30, 40 may all be formed from the same conducting material by milling or printing a single conductive layer. The short conductive strip members 40 may occupy from 75% to 98% of the meander loop area available. The short conductive strip members 40 may be separate and electrically isolated from the meandering members 20, 30 or they may be coupled to or connected to the meandering members by variable capacitor or switchable MEMS devices. A compact, broadband polariser with controllable frequency selective surface characteristics may be provided. Multiple layer arrangements are also mentioned. |
