A load application mechanism for use in a method for testing the efficacy of a preparation or dressing for the prevention of skin inflammation or blister. The mechanism is used to generate a force or pressure, in combination with a rubbing means which creates friction and leads to skin inflammation. The contact means rubs against the skin of a participant and includes means for controlling the rate at which the contact means contact a participant's skin. The inflamed area is observed using thermal imaging.
