<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a scale and a linear encoder capable of enhancing portability, reducing cost for packaging and transportation and being easily attached to an object to be measured. <P>SOLUTION: A linear encoder 1 basically comprises a scale 2 having grid markings and a head 3 relatively moving along the scale 2, and measures the position of the head 3 to the scale 2. The scale 2 is attached to any one of two objects to be measured which displace relatively. And in the scale 2, a shape-memory alloy is used as a material.
