<p>1-Methyl-3-phenyl-indanes of formula (I): (in which R1, R2 and R3 are H or alkyl and R3 may also be halogen) are prepd. by dimerisation of gaseous styrenes of formula (II) or cyclisation of 1,3-diphenyl-but-1-enes of formula (III): at a temp. above 150 degrees C in the presence of phosphoric acid, H2SO4 or liquid halogenated alkanecarboxylic acids, or at 100-150 degrees C in the presence of a mixt. contg. 79-10% P2O5, 1-60% H2SO4 and 20-30% H2O. (I) are intermediates for dyes and pesticides.</p> |
