Granules of ion exchange material are scrubbed in order to remove accumulated foreign material therefrom by a method which comprises introducing into the bottom of a compacted water-containing bed of granules a gas or vapour which passes upwardly through the bed to expand the bed thereby to open the effective flow passages between the granules and to effect scrubbing of the granules and introducing into the bed of granules rinse water which flows downwardly through at least part of the bed thereby to flush foreign material therefrom whilst the bed is still expanded, the introduction of gas or vapour and of rinse water being effected either as successive steps, which steps are repeated at least once after the granules have been allowed to resettle to form a compacted bed, or simultaneously. As exemplified with reference to Figures 1 to 4 (not shown), the gas or vapour and the rinse water are introduced as successive steps, each of the gas or vapour and the rinse water passing or flowing through the entire height of the bed; as exemplified with reference to either Figure 5 (not shown) or Figure 6 (not shown), the gas or vapour and the rinse water are introduced simultaneously, either the gas or vapour being introduced at a level slightly above the bottom of the bed and the rinse water flowing through the entire height of the bed (Figure 5) or the gas or vapour passing through the entire height of the bed and the rinse water being introduced above the top of the bed and being removed below the bottom of the bed and/or at a level above the bottom of the bed (Figure 6). The gas or vapour may be air or steam. |
