1,260,898. Block copolymer compositions. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 10 Sept., 1969 [12 Sept., 1968], No. 44629/69. Heading C3P. A composition comprises (a) 100 parts by weight of a non-polar block copolymer of the configuration A-B-(-B-A) 1-5 or a hydrogenated derivative thereof, and (b) 1-100 parts by weight of a polar block copolymer of the configuration A-C-(-C-A) 0-5 or a hydrogenated derivative thereof, wherein A is a polymer block of a monovinyl substituted aromatic hydrocarbon, B is a polymer block of a conjugated diene and C is a conjugated diene polymer block wherein at least 10% of the double bands have been replaced by substituents which are or contain similar or different functional groups selected from, halogen, hydroxyl, carboxyl, carbonyl, and epoxy. The total of blocks A in the non-polar block copolymer preferably comprise 25-55% by weight of said copolymer, which also preferably has blocks A with average molecular weight of between 12,000 and 30,000 and blocks B of between 35,000 and 100,000. Preferred compositions are where component (a) has the general configuration polystyrene-polybutadiene-(polystyrene-polybutadiene) 1-3 and (b) has the general configuration of polystyrene - (hydrobrominated polybutadiene), or polystyrene-(hydrochlorinated polybutadiene), or polystyrene- (carboxylated polybutadiene), or polystyrene- (hydroxylated polybutadiene) or polystyrene- (epoxidized polybutadiene). The polar groups are introduced by derivatizing the block copolymer with agents such as peracetic acid for epoxide groups, HBr and HCl for halogens. Specification 1,260,897 is referred to.
