Head-mountable apparatus and systems

A head mountable display (HMD) (20, Figure 1) system has a virtual screen for display of video material. The size and/or distance of the virtual screen from the viewer of depends upon whether the video material is in a 2-D or a 3-D format 520; the image resolution of the video material; and the compression quality and/or data rate of the video material and the aspect ratio, origin or metadata associated with the video material. If the input data represents high-definition video material, the display selected at step 530 would be that of a large virtual screen at a long distance from the viewer, so as to simulate a cinema experience. A domestic television setting or a virtual 3d environment could also be selected. Metadata may also be detected to define the windowing of data and to deal with windowing violations.
