The present invention relates to diionic liquid salts of dicationic or dianionic molecules, as well as solvents comprising such diionic liquids and the use of such diionic liquids as the stationary phase in a gas chromatographic column.

1. A mixed stationary phase, comprising:
at least one stationary phase material selected from the group consisting of polysiloxane, polyethyleneglycol, methylpolysiloxane, phenyl substituted methylpolysiloxane, nitrile substituted methylpolysiloxane and carbowax, and at least one dicationic liquid salt comprising a dicationic species of Formula I:
A-B-A′  Formula I and at least one counter anion, wherein each of A and A′ is wherein each R is selected from the group consisting of alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, cycloalkyl, phenyl, and benzyl, and n is 0 or 1; and B is an optionally substituted C2-C40 hydrocarbon backbone, wherein the hydrocarbon backbone optionally contains at least one heteroatom selected from the group consisting of nitrogen, oxygen, sulfur, and silicon, and wherein the mixed stationary phase is absorbed, adsorbed or immobilized on a solid support or chromatography column.
