PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a touch panel unit and a display device that can speed up position detection.SOLUTION: A touch panel unit includes: a light shield determination part 52 which determines whether light of an optical path between a first light emitting element and a first light receiving element is cut off when the first light emitting element emits the light and the first light receiving element among a predetermined number of light receiving elements receives the light; a setting part (effective scan determination part 54) which sets all determination positions on the optical path as non-cutoff positions when it is determined that the light is not cut off in the optical path; and a determination control part (effective scan determination part 54) which performs control not to determine whether light is cut off in an optical path between a second light emitting element and a second light receiving element on condition that all determination positions in the optical path between the second light emitting element and second light receiving element are set as non-cutoff positions when the second light emitting element emits the light and the second light receiving element among the predetermined number of light receiving elements receives the light. |
