PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a power converter and a power conversion method which allows for quick discharge of charges stored in a smoothing capacitor, without causing complication or cost increase of the system, while protecting an inverter and a three-phase AC motor reasonably upon collision or power stop of a vehicle.SOLUTION: When a discharge determination instruction unit instructs execution of discharge operation, an inverter control unit detects presence or absence of short-circuit fault of a power semiconductor element included in an inverter, fixes the potential at a joint of the inverter and a motor to a preset potential. After the potential at a joint of the inverter and a motor is fixed to a preset potential, a converter control unit controls a converter so as to discharge the charges stored in a first smoothing capacitor and a second smoothing capacitor. |
