1355421 Moulded-in filter element ABBOTT LABORATORIES 23 June 1971 [8 July 1970] 29523/71 Heading B5A [Also in Division B1] A filter for the air inlet port of a disposable intravenous fluid administration system comprises a tubular plastics body integrally moulded around a section of filter material 20. A plurality of such filters are moulded on to a single sheet of filter material 20 (Fig. 2) which is initially laid on an apertured plate 32, resting on plates 34 and 36 which support sleeves 42 extending into each aperture to define the lower parts of mould cavities. The passage 5 is defined by core pins 58 and 72, extending respectively up to the material 20, and bore 74 in upper plate 64 defines the upper part of the mould cavity. Plastics is injected to fill the mould cavity as shown, and plates 64, 66, 46, 48 and 50 are lifted so that sleeve 56 pushes the filter body out of sleeve 42, pin 58 being held down against plate 52 by spring 62. The injection pressure forces plastics through the material 20 to unite the body portions on both sides thereof. The individual moulded bodies are separated from their common sheet 20 by a punch and trim die (Fig. 3, not shown) having apertures corresponding to those in the mould plates to cut all the bodies from the sheet at once. |
