1. A method of operating a ventilation system, the method comprising:
(a) causing a processor to execute a plurality of instructions stored in a memory device to operate with a flow regulator to deliver a volume of gas to a lung of a patient according to at least one setting for one or more ventilator parameters; (b) causing the processor to execute the plurality of instructions to operate with an operator interface to enable an operator to set the one or more ventilator settings; (c) causing the processor to execute the plurality of instructions to operate with the operator interface to enable the operator to set at least one criterion for a physiological parameter; (d) causing the processor to execute the plurality of instructions to operate with an input device to detect the physiological parameter; (e) causing the processor to execute the plurality of instructions to vary at least one of the settings, wherein:
(i) if the criterion is satisfied, at least one of the settings is reduced at a default rate, and(ii) if the criterion is not satisfied, at least one of the settings is varied randomly.
