A damping force adjustable shock absorber, wherein damping force is generated by inserting a piston (5) to which a piston rod (6) is connected into a cylinder (2) in which oily liquid is sealed, and controlling an oily liquid flow generated by the movement of the piston (5) by a damping force generation mechanism (26). In the damping force generation mechanism (26), the damping force is generated by a pilot-type main valve (27) and a normally open pilot valve (28) that is a solenoid valve, and the damping force is adjusted by the passage of electric current through a coil (37). A fail valve (100) is provided on the downstream side from the pilot valve (28). The fail valve (100) opens a flow path by the excitation of the coil (37) of the pilot valve (28) under normal operation conditions, and when there is a failure, narrows the flow path by the disappearance of the excitation, and generates appropriate damping force in place of the inoperable pilot vale (28). |
