PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a transmitter and a transmission method capable of properly transmitting stereoscopic image data among devices.SOLUTION: The transmitter transmits a stereoscopic image data for displaying a stereoscopic image to an external device via a transmission channel using differential signals through plural channels. A data for transmitting the stereoscopic image data is acquired via an interface. A piece of transmission system information of the stereoscopic image data, which the external device can handle and which is transmitted through the transmission channel from the external device, is received. A predetermined transmission system is selected from transmission systems of the stereoscopic image data that the external device can handle based on the received transmission system information. The information of the transmission system of the stereoscopic image data to be transmitted is inserted in a blanking period and transmitted to the external device via the transmission channel.
