A communications system for communicates data to and from a user device. The system comprises infrastructure equipment forming a mobile communications network arranged to transmit data to and receive data from the user device via a wireless access interface, the user device configured to transmit data to and receive data from the infrastructure equipment. The user device is configured to receive an indication from the infrastructure equipment of a location and duration of a temporal response window for receiving response messages, the response messages being received in response to access requests messages, and to transmit to the infrastructure equipment an access request message for requesting access to the wireless access interface. The user device is also configured to receive a response message from the infrastructure equipment in response to the access request message. The infrastructure equipment is configured to transmit the indication to the user device of the location and duration of the temporal response window for receiving response messages in response to access requests messages, a location and duration of the temporal response window having been determined by the infrastructure equipment, and to receive the access request message from the user device. The infrastructure equipment is also configured to process the access request message and generate the response message, and to transmit the response message to the user device, wherein the infrastructure equipment is configured to transmit the response message within the temporal response window, and the user device is configured to receive the response message within the temporal response window. |
