PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device and a projection display device smaller in size, having a simpler configuration.SOLUTION: A projection display device 1 includes an illumination device 2, a control unit 3, a light guide optical system 4, an image generating unit 5, and a projection optical system 6. The illumination device 2 includes a light source unit 10 that emits first light, an optical path splitting element 11, a quarter-wave plate 12, a third condensing element 13, an optical path switching element 14 having a reflective part 14a and a transmissive part 14b, a wavelength converting member 15 that generates second light, a fourth condensing element 16, and a color selecting element 17. The first light is reflected by the reflective part 14a and guided as first illumination light to an exiting optical path Pi, while the first light transmitted through the transmissive part 14b is used as excitation light to generate second illumination light from the wavelength converting member 15. The second illumination light is made to pass through the transmissive part 14b, then reflected by the optical path splitting element 11, and guided to the same exiting optical path Pi as of the first illumination light. |
