Provided are an illumination device and a projector with which faults that have occurred in a wheel can be satisfactorily detected using a simple configuration. The present invention relates to an illumination device (4) provided with: a light source device (41); a rotary diffusion panel (48) which is provided with a first surface, a second surface, a diffusion unit (49) provided to the first surface, and a detection unit (51) provided to the first surface and/or the second surface, said rotary diffusion panel (48) having, incident thereon, light from the light source device (41); a condensing optical system (47) which has, incident thereon, light from the diffusion unit (49); a detector (52) for detecting light from the detection unit (51); and a control device (CONT) for controlling the light source device (41) in accordance with a signal outputted from the detector (52). The detection unit (51) is provided in a position which is different from a position where the light from the light source device (41) is incident on the diffusion unit (49). |
